Believe it or not, perfectionism is a very common cause of disorganization. Seems counter-intuitive that a perfectionist could be disorganized, doesn’t it? Well, the desire for perfection is often so strong that it creates immobility, both at the onset of your organizing projects, and anywhere in the process if you begin to realize things aren’t turning out perfectly. If you feel that perfectionism is getting in the way of your desire for a more organized home and life, the first step is to recognize this fact. Then, look for ways to take small steps in the direction you want to go. Give yourself permission to organize imperfectly by focusing your attention on progress instead of perfection.
When I read this, it triggered a thought process in me… This “perfectionistic” attitude grabs us, and paralyzes us, in every aspect of life. I want to exercise, but I do not feel like I am consistent enough to make a difference, so I never try. I want to eat right, but I had that cookie today, so I will start again tomorrow instead of at the next meal. I want to spend more family time with the kids. I will plan game nights, and outings, etc. but because I miss a week or two of game night we find ourselves not doing them again at all.
My husband’s favorite quote is “You don’t have to get it right, You just have to get it going“. I am reminding myself this a lot these days. So let us try to remember this great advice in whatever thing you are trying to conquer today; Clutter in your home, your body, or your mind!
Hi!
I just found your blog. I can’t wait to read more. I have four kids as well…(live in Alaska) I can relate to a lot of your posts.
Great site!

I have heard this theory before and I agree. I have a very organized house. I am not bragging- just describing. See I get a real ‘high’ from having an organized closet or cleaning out the pantry. And no I am not kidding…and it pyschological source? CONTROL. When I clean and organized and put everything in its place- I feel in control of my life. And ‘they’ say people who do this…feel out of control in the rest of their life. SO TRUE.
Guess there are reasons behind everything we do huh?
