A Fresh flowing River

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38 NIV)

Yesterday, a friend of mine called me to check on me. Wanted to see if I was o.k. since I sent my daughter to her first day of kindergarten. (More details and pics. on that later.)
I said I was fine, not many tears. However, I poured some things on her about other things in my life. We both shared about what God is doing in us, and the struggles we are facing at the same time. Although, yet again, I felt as if I was the one that got the most ministering to. She encouraged me and spoke so much life into my circumstances, then showed up on my door step with flowers, among other things, God bless her!

Lately I have felt like so many have been pouring into me. When she showed up on my doorstep I cried, and told her how I didn’t expect all that she did for me. She said “I knew you were going to say that. You know how to give, now you need to receive.” (I must say I think none of us realize how much we struggle with receiving until we have to receive) Then another friend called me last night. She wanted to cry on me, and share her struggles, which I was more than happy to oblige. I was specifically chosen since she knew I was in the same boat with her. I turned around and gave back to her all that had been poured into me that morning. Only I couldn’t take her flowers because we are states away. After feeling better about her situation she went on to feel bad for “dumping” on me. I told her that was not necessary. I was able to release what I had received. Then I said “if you want to feel better about it, go tomorrow and find someone to share this with”.

There is something about sharing your faith that actually stirs it up. Speaking out what you know to be true, even when your feelings dictate otherwise, somehow breaks off the depression and breathes life right back into you!

It reminded me of a former post I had written:

Joyce Meyers wrote in “The Confident Woman” of two seas that the Jordan River flows into. The first is life-giving; children play and swim there, and it is full of fish, and life, and trees grow by its shore. The second has none of those things. It has no life, no fish, no trees. The water is so full of salt that you would float if you tried to swim in it. The first one is the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus taught and could often be found. The second, I am sure you have guessed, is the Dead Sea. One has life, the other death. Why? They both form from the same river. Yet only one both receives and gives freely, and breeds life. The other takes in, gives nothing of itself, is isolated, and death is all that is there. I have even recently heard reports on the news that the Dead Sea is slowly disappearing, half of what it was, and no one knows why.

Think about that for a moment … the difference between life and death is giving of what you have and receiving from others what you don’t.

What is Faith?

There are a lot of answers to this question. According to Paul in Hebrews 11:1 “…faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” I have heard this verse all my life. I know that in essence faith sees and knows what the human eye does not. Because I have grown up in faith it is something I have a hard time explaining in simple terms, honestly I have a hard time understanding it in simple terms. It sort of takes faith to understand faith.

I know it may seem I am not making sense, today. But that is sort of my point. It is hard to know if you are walking in faith when struggling through a circumstance. The thoughts of doubt. The voices of “reason” both externally and internally all scream at you. Then you become frustrated that you are now doubting again. Oh what a game that is played. I am not even sure how much of the game involves the attack of the enemy, and how much is our own doing. Still battling that one out as well.

This past week, a conversation turned into counseling between me and two other ladies. All three of us facing our own struggles and walking out even trying to understand the “whys” of our circumstances. You know “Why does God do it this way?”, “Why does God allow this to happen?”. The “whys” that catapult us into a spiral of more questions unanswered, and even more frustrated than before. Then one of them, Dr. Beth, made a profound statement. (I must say she made many, but this one really stuck with me) She said “Faith is not believing God for something, it is believing God through something”

It is not about never having a thought of doubt. See I may wonder why I have not had the breakthrough in my life. I may have doubts about the “whens” and “hows” and “whys”, but I never doubt the “who”. Faith is that no matter what my circumstances are God is still who He says He is. He is still the God of more than enough, He is still my provider, He is still the God of healing, He is still the God of life and life more abundantly, He is still the God who fulfills His promises, He is still all that I need, no matter what my circumstances tell me. Now apply this to Hebrews 11:1, Faith believes in God even when circumstances tell us otherwise.

To the left or to the right?

Schoolbus

Can’t make up your mind?
Look carefully at the picture again.

Still don’t know?

Pre-schoolers all over the United States

were shown this picture asked the same question.
90% of the pre-schooler’s gave this answer.
“The bus is traveling to the left.”

When asked, “Why do you think the bus is traveling to the left?” They answered: “Because you can’t see the door to get on the bus.”

How do you feel now ???…I know, me too.

Peroxide: A Cleaning Miracle?

I received an email recently about the multiple uses for Peroxide. I knew some were true, because I have used it for some of the purposes listed (i.e. canker sores), but I tested some of the others and found that it really does work! My sister, for example, tried putting it on a blood stain in her carpet, and an old yellow throw up stain from her dog, and she said it bubbled just like on a wound, and then completely dissolved the stains. The throw up was old, and had been treated before! She said, “I have been wasting my money on more expensive spot cleaners”. So here are some of the tips that I have found really work with Peroxide which is very cost effective (we are talking 50 cents to a dollar a bottle)

1- It is a great treatment for kids”boo-boos” because it does not sting, plus they love to watch it bubble.Yet it is very strong. My mom used it on a Post surgical open wound on me when I was young, and that was the only disinfectant she used.

2-Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of “Peroxide” to keep them free of
germs.

3-Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a
fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it
on the counters.

4-Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture
whenever you have a cold, or plugged sinuses. It will bubble and help to
kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes then blow your nose into a
tissue.

5-Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus,
or other skin infections.

6-You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of
whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour
directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse
with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

7-No more canker sores and your teeth will be whiter without expensive
pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash. (Small print says mouth wash and
gargle right on the bottle – Most whitening toothpastes contain peroxide)

8- If you  like a natural look to your hair, spray the
50/50 solution on your wet hair  after a shower and comb it through. You
will not have the peroxide burnt  blonde hair like the hair dye packages,
but more natural highlights if your  hair is a light brown, faddish, or
dirty blonde. (I have not actually tried this myself.)

Battlefield of the Mind…Choosing to Think Positive

I am currently reading Joyce Meyer’s book “Battlefield of the Mind”. Today, I simply want to share an excerpt from this book. It has already shown me so much about my thought life. I hope this helps you, and possibly encourages you to go get the book.

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7
Positive minds produce positive lives. Negative minds produce negative lives. Positive thoughts are always full of faith and hope. Negative thoughts are always full of fear and doubt… Many years ago, I was extremely negative. I always say that if I thought two positive thoughts in a row my mind would get in a cramp. My whole philosophy on life was this: “If you don’t expect anything good to happen, then you won’t be disappointed when it doesn’t.”

When I really began to study the Word and to trust God to restore me, one of the first things I realized was that the negativism had to go. In Matthew 8:13 Jesus tells us that it will be done for us as we have believed. The king James version says, “…as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee…” Everything I believed was negative, so naturally many negative things happened to me.

This doesn’t mean that you and I can get whatever we want by just thinking about it. God has a perfect plan for each of us, and we can’t control Him with our thoughts and words. But, we must think and speak in agreement with His will and plan for us.

If you don’t have any idea what God’s will is for you at this point, at least begin by thinking, “Well, I don’t know God’s plan, but I know He loves me. Whatever He does will be good, and I’ll be blessed.”

Begin to think positively about your life. Practice being positive in every situation that arises. Even if whatever is taking place in your life at the moment is not so good, expect God to bring good out of it, as He promised in His word. (Romans 8:28)

Even a person who is really positive won’t have everything work out the way he would like it to all the time. But the positive person can go ahead and decide to enjoy himself no matter what happens. The negative person never enjoys anything.

How Did You Get Your Husband To Let You Do That?

I am back and in full swing of routine and family life. If you are a regular reader you know that I took last week for a girls beach trip for the first time since I have been married. Kelly (From Journey’s With Kelly) joined me, her first girls trip in 13 years! We had quite the group. Three of us were married with children, one who is married no children, and one who is single and wish she was in any of our shoes.

If you ever get the opportunity to take a trip like this, make it with your life long friends for sure! We had a wonderful time reconnecting, remembering and relaxing. The great thing about those who have known you all your life, you truly can let your hair down and relax. The first few days we were just so excited that we laughed and giggled like a group of teenagers, by the end of the week we were all so mellowed we hardly spoke on the way home.

While we were there everyone on the beach and at the pool realized we were without men or children and the most asked question was “How did you get your husband to let you do that?” We would lauuuuugh! My sister said “Well we have been preparing them all year. We planned their activities, the childcare, and packed everyone’s bags, and made sure all they had to do was go to work, and play with the kids.” As true as all that is, I think we have some incredible husbands, too.

Now that I have returned I am refreshed and ready to face the very busy time ahead. I know, as well as my husband knows, that I can be a better mother and wife because of last week. Thank you to my girlfriends and my husband for the wonderful relaxing time… Until next time!

Panama City Beach Girl’s Trip ‘07

From Angel’s Husband, Ben

Angel is currently at the beach in Panama City, Florida with several of her girlfriends … enjoying some much-needed, and well-deserved vacation time.
There was supposed to be an article published this morning on 1SmartMom about peroxide being a miracle cleaner, but it looks like that post was completely empty! (Maybe when she gets back from the beach, she can share that tip with you.)

Instead, I would like to take this opportunity to brag on my wife a little bit

Angel is the love of my life, my partner, my best friend, and my confidante. She is incredibly gifted in many areas, not least of which is being the most supportive and loving wife anybody could ever have! She believes in me and supports me in my dreams, but more importantly, she has stood by my side through some really tough stuff.

I believe that we strengthen each other … where I have a weakness in one area, she seems to be especially strong. When we are facing a problem, or going through “the refiner’s fire”, we seem to be able to depend on each other to make it through. I am not always strong, always positive, always certain of how things will turn out … I have days as well when it takes everything within me to push through and believe that God is going to take care of us. But no matter what, I know that I am not in this all by myself! I have someone by my side who is there to pull me up, encourage me, strengthen me, and make things better.

Angel is the type of person who brings out the best in me! She makes me want to be a better me, to be a better daddy, a better husband. No, Angel is not perfect … but neither am I. If we both had everything worked out and could handle things individually without the other’s help, one of us would be unnecessary! Everybody has “rough edges” and I certainly have my fair share, but I am most thankful to have a wife who can help bring balance to my life, and help me get rid of those rough edges.

What does it take to be a godly wife and mother? What do I appreciate most about my wife? I think the most important thing is that Angel has a heart after God … she understands that everything will not always be perfect, but that as long as she is seeking God, everything will work out so that God gets the glory. She doesn’t try to “fix” me or always point out my problems … instead, because of the time she spends in prayer during her daily devotional, she trusts God to show her what she can change. And that is what I appreciate most about Angel … when I see a change (for the better) in her, it makes me want to change as well.

Angel, I love you with all of my heart and I thank God for you!

Grow old along with me … the best is yet to be!

Organized Travels

By Aby Garvey

Ah vacation…time to relax, get away from it all and really enjoy the good stuff in life. You leave your worries behind, and with any luck at all…not your toothbrush! But how to remember it all and how to pack it so you can find it when you need it? Simple: when you go on vacation take along some of the same organizing principles you use to stay organized at home. Then, just sit back, relax and enjoy…

Here’s how:

Use a checklist. Checklists are fantastic memory joggers, and are especially helpful for staying organized when doing something you do infrequently. The less often you travel, the more important it is to have a reliable and thorough travel checklist. Start by downloading my travel checklist and modify it to suit your travel needs. Then, add to the checklist after each trip to customize it even further.

Designate a place for everything. We’ve all heard the saying “a place for everything, and everything in its place.” This simple principle makes it simple to stay organized on the road. For example, on my trip to Seattle I took along an infrequently used backpack. I designated homes for critical items: camera in the main compartment, wallet in the inside center zipper pocket, sunglasses in the outside right hand pocket, and cell phone in the outside left hand pocket. I called these items my “critical four” and after each stop I checked to make sure they were put back away…which leads me to the next on-the-road-organizing strategy.

Put your things away when you’re finished using them. I know…its vacation, but believe me, if you carve out a spot for things and then put them away as soon as you’re finished using them…you’ll add to the overall peace of mind of the vacation. Knowing exactly where to find your camera, wallet, cell phone, sunglasses and any other item that would be inconvenient or expensive to lose makes for a more relaxing vacation.

Get in the zone. When organizing a room, activity zones make it easier to do the various activities that take place in the space. Think of your suitcase as a small room. Create zones in your bags by keeping similar items grouped together. You could have your morning and night time prep zone and corral items like your toothbrush, toothpaste, face cleaner, moisturizer, etc. into a single cosmetic bag or zipper bag. You could create an outings zone by loading all your outdoor gear like bug spray, hand wipes, sun screen, etc. into a single take along bag. By grouping things together how you use them, it will be easier to do the things you want to do while you’re away from home.

Leave room for expansion. When you organize a room, it’s always nice to leave a little breathing room–extra space to accommodate a growing collection or new purchases. Travel is no different. If you anticipate buying souvenirs while away, be sure to leave extra space in your suitcase or carry-on, or take along an extra bag to load up with your travel treasures.

Less is more. Whenever I reorganize and purge clothes from my closet, I’m always amazed at how it feels like I have more…when in fact I have less. Take this principal with you on the road. The fewer things you bring along, the less time you’ll spend keeping track of your things or digging through your bags to find what you’re looking for.

On your next vacation, take along these basic organizing principles…and you’ll create a calm, relaxing (and organized!) getaway.

Did God Really Say?

“Ask…in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 NIV
When severe drought hit a small farming community in the Midwest, a local church called a prayer meeting and everybody showed up…As the pastor stood before his packed church he noticed an 11-year-old girl sitting in the front row, beaming with excitement. Lying next to her was her bright red umbrella poised for use. The beauty and innocence of this sight made him smile as he compared the faith of this child with that of the rest of the people in the room. You see, the rest of them had just come to pray for rain – she had come to see God answer! ~Bob Gass

When you pray, do you bring your umbrella? Do you expect an answer? The greatest power the devil has over you is to cause you to wonder, to doubt what God has promised you. In fact the first sin began with a simple seed of doubt. The serpent asked Eve “Did God really say…?” The question is will God hear your prayers? Did God really say he would give you the desires of your heart?(Psalm 37:4) Did God really say “ask and it shall be given to you”? (Matt. 7:7; Luke 11:9; James 1:5)If the enemy can cause you to question your promise then he has already won, because as James so clearly states “let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.” (James 1:6-7)

The answer to this is simple, but not necessarily easy. When Jesus was tempted in the desert he always had the same response “It is written…” . Paul told Timothy to study to show himself approved, so that he would not need to be ashamed. (2 Timothy 2:15) When you feel the doubts and the questions coming to you then you need to tell yourself, and the devil, “It is written…” Of course you can not do this without knowing the scripture, which is why you must study.
( A little side note: If you need to search a particular subject, verse, or word, you can find it easily at blueletterbible.org It does not have to be difficult.)

So the next time you pray bring your umbrella, and the next time the devil asks you “Did God say?” You can be prepared to say, yes He did!
